With hundreds, if not thousands, of language learning apps available, why create another? As a Japanese language learner, I found many excellent resources, but none were truly comprehensive, combining SRS (Spaced Repetition Software) for vocabulary, writing systems, and grammar. By integrating the best features from various Japanese learning apps and gathering feedback from learners at different levels, I aimed to create a well-rounded and useful resource for Japanese learners for my final Capstone project at Oregon State University.
I approached this project as a way to explore both new applications of my design skills, particularly in UI design, with my passion for learning Japanese. Not being fluent, I collaborated with professors, students, and my personal tutor to develop a robust foundation of learning materials for the app.
The app’s main feature, Spaced Repetition Software (SRS), helps enhance learning in vocabulary, grammar, and writing systems. SRS helps the user retain information by spacing review sessions at optimal intervals, effectively reinforcing language elements just before they fade from memory. This method significantly boosts long-term retention and recall of language components.
